Add or subtract two matrices as appropriate. Interpret the result.

Sample Question

JustJeans stores can be found in three cities. Consider the following matrices.

  1. Explain why matrix #1 can or can't be added to matrix #2.
  2. Explain why matrix #1 can or can't be added to matrix #3.
  3. Add the two matrices that can be added together to create a new matrix. (Be sure to use appropriate labels.)
Explain what information this new matrix tells.

Sample Response

  1. Matrix #1 and #2 can be added together since they have the same size and the entries are describing the same thing (number of jeans).
  2. Matrix #1 and #3 can't be added together since they don't have the same size even though they both have entries that describe the same thing.

  3. This new matrix tells the total jean sales for quarters 1 and 2 together.
