Target 6A

Understand the proportional properties of circular motion.

  • Find transmission factor.
  • Use transmission factor to solve problems.

Sample Questions

  1. In a certain motor there are two sprockets joined by a chain. The smaller sprocket has 22 teeth. The larger sprocket has 44 teeth.
When the large sprocket is turned at 500 revolutions per minute, how fast is the smaller sprocket turning?

  2. The front crankset on Billy's bike has a chainring with 32 teeth. The rear hub has a gear with 12 teeth.
    1. What is the transmission factor?
    2. If Billy pedals the crankset at 10 revolutions per minute, how fast is the rear tire turning?

Sample Response

  1. The smaller sprocket will turn twice as fast since it has half the teeth. So the smaller sprocket will be turning at 1000 rpm.
  2. Billy's bike sounds pretty sweet.
    1. 32/12 = 2.66667
    2. 10*2.66667 = 26.66667 rpm
